In Uruguayans on the Road, we pick out three stand-out performances of Uruguayans playing abroad. This week’s edition sees Sebastián Coates, Fernando Muslera and Nicolás Lodeiro feature.

1. Sebastián Coates (Sporting CP)

A goal on Friday vs. Estoril in the Liga NOS caught the eye but what really lets Sebastián Coates make this list, is his dominant defending of recent weeks. Certainly Big Seba’s performance away at Real Madrid in the Champions League surprised a lot of people. Sporting were unlucky to suffer two late goals, but there was nothing you could blame Coates for as he was simply faultless. If he keeps playing like this, he might put pressure on José María Giménez for his place in the Uruguay team.

2. Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray)

When a team concedes two goals, it’s not usual to point out the keeper as a stand-out performer. However, in Galatasaray’s 2-2 draw with Besiktas that was the case as Fernando Muslera was simply outstanding. He showcased his well-known shot stopping abilities to deny Besiktas the three points.

3. Nicolás Lodeiro (Seattle Sounders)

Holland, Brazil and Argentina; all have seen some good appearances from Nicolás Lodeiro, but it looks like the Uruguayan has saved his best football for the country that call the game ‘soccer’. Another great performance this weekend vs. La Galaxy – marked with an assist – makes Nico one of the most feared players in the Major Soccer League at the moment. If he could replicate this kind of form for the national team, we got a real playmaker on our hands.
