In Uruguayans on the Road, we pick out three stand-out performances of Uruguayans playing abroad. This week’s edition sees Edinson Cavani, Mauricio Lemos and Jonathan Rodriguez feature.
1. Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)
El Matador might be the most pressurized No9 in world football, but replied to his critics with an outstanding day in front of goal this weekend. In the Ligue 1 meeting with SM Caen, Cavani managed to score four goals before being substituted at half-time. Not only does his clinical display silence some people, it also gives the former Napoli player a much-needed confidence boost.
2. Mauricio Lemos (Las Palmas)
The suspension of regular Las Palmas centre-back Pedro Bigas, presented Mauricio Lemos his first appearance of the season. Despite a run of games last season wherein he impressed and even attracted the interest of Barcelona, Las Palmas manager Quique Setíen opted not to make him a starter at the start of this La Liga campaign. Lemos’ performance vs. Malaga might, however, make Setíen reconsider his decision.
3. Jonathan Rodriguez (Santos Laguna)
Former Peñarol player Jonathan Rodriguez left Benfica this summer to get his career going again. The 23-year-old signed for Mexican side Santos Laguna, and so far it seems to be a good move. Five goals in nine games including two goals this weekend that led Santos Laguna to the victory is not bad at all. If Cabecita can continue this form, he might be getting a call from Oscar Tabárez in the near future.
