Beforehand Uruguay was seen as one of the favorites but without Luis Suárez being able to make any contribution, the Copa América dream is over. At the expense of Uruguay, Venezuela and Mexico will continue their hunt for glory and leave La Celeste with much to reflect.

Worst Copa América campaign in years.

Uruguay were always going to miss Suárez, but that they aren’t able to beat Venezuela without him is embarrassing. To be honest, La Celeste didn’t deserve anything from the game. The transition from defence to attack was just too slow. Even when Uruguay eventually got in the final third, the players didn’t keep their composure and gave away possession far too easy. Despite all of that, Oscar Tabárez’ men could have still got a result from the game when Edinson Cavani got a golden opportunity in the 90th minute.

However, like I said; they didn’t deserve anything from the game. To point out how bad Uruguay’s Copa América campaign was, this is the first time they have been eliminated in the Copa América group stages since 1997. It’s also the first time Oscar Tabárez suffered elimination before the knockout stages in his 8th major tournament as manager of Uruguay.

What’s next for Uruguay?

Uruguay may still be top of the World Cup 2018 qualifying table, but this team is in need of refreshment. Eleven players of Uruguay’s Copa América squad were part of the World Cup 2010 squad as well. With fearless players like Nico Lopéz (Nacional), Giorgan de Arrascaeta (Cruzeiro) and Gastón Pereiro (PSV Eindhoven) coming through, Oscar Tabárez should begin to replace a part of the squad as this Uruguay team lack some flair. Apart, from Suárez and Cavani, occasionally, there are hardly any players who are capable of creating something on their own.

Lastly, I want to discuss El Maestro‘s position. On Twitter, I saw a lot of people calling for his head and say things like “his reign is over”. For me, that’s not the solution. Tabárez revolutionized Uruguayan football and brought this country success again. Therefore, he should be cherished. However, there are things he needs to change in this squad in order not to fall behind. Like I said, our young players need to be given a chance. If that happens, I am very hopeful for the coming years.
